Review of the Novel: Henrietta

Henrietta

By: Patricia M Jackson

Rating: 4 Glasses

Steamy novels are my weakness as I have said many times before so it was no challenge for me to pick this up. I really enjoyed this romance book. There were not a lot of suspense and surprises but was still very enjoyable. It was a fun love story with all the necessary to fulfill the need in a romance novel. If you are a romance fan than it will be a perfect fit.

Indie Film Friday: Chaplin

Chaplin

Directed by: Richard Attenborough

Staring: Robert Downey Jr.

The Breakdown: This film is about the troubled life of the infamous Charlie Chaplin

My Review:
I found this film when searching for something to watch on Netflix. It popped up and instantly drew my attention. I had heard of it before and knew that many say that it is one of RDJ's best performances so I had to give it a shot. I was not disappointed. Downey's performance is mesmerizing. The film is very long but I never felt bored and that is with a film that's strength is its amazing dialog and not its action. Chaplin is a character I knew very little about. I knew about "the tramp" and some of his films but not the man himself. This film gave me a window into the man behind the movies and made for a great afternoon. If you are a not an RDJ fan, this is the film to make you one. A must see!

Review of the Novel: Jumbo Hill

Jumbo Hill

By: Karmel Graham

Rating: 4 Glasses

I was emotionally drained when I finished this book. It was an emotionally charged story about enduring the darkness that overcomes some people. The book can be a difficult read mostly due to the subject matter. The writing is brilliant and invokes the emotions that bring tears to the readers eyes. If you like a good cry and a story that gives you hope this is a perfect book for you.

Review of the Novel: Moving On

Moving On

By: Pavan Kaur

Rating: 4 Glasses

I have a weakness for raunchy books so I was eager to pick this one up. It follows a pretty predictable story of the rich powerful man who is driven to get this broken women who has no interest in him. That being said I still enjoyed it. I loved the story and the characters and made my way easily through the story. So if you enjoy romance books this one is a great one to pick up and enjoy.

Ana's Post

How much time do you spend examining the other people in a public restroom?

There has been a lot of press lately over the issue of the Target bathrooms being inclusive. I know that addressing this may cost me a few fans or upset some people but I wanted to address something that many people may never have considered. There is a 90% chance you have used a public bathroom with a transgender person before and had no idea. Now, I have no math to put up that number it is just an estimate but think about it.

I know for a fact that I have, I want to share the story for all of you:

I was eight years old and visiting Boston, MA with my father on a business trip. Once we entered the hotel I noticed a lot of women but as I later told my dad "ugly women" (yes I was eight and had no filter) My dad explained to me that it wasn't nice to call people ugly and that they were not women but men dressed as women. He explained that they were "Transvestites". It had came to his attention, per a sign, we were staying at the same hotel as a convention. "Oh ok. They need to work on walking in heels." I responded to him. I was not disgusted or confused. I didn't think about it again until later that evening when I was using the bathroom in the hotel restaurant and encountered three of the convention goers in the restroom. They were fixing their make-up and chatting at the mirror. They said hello to me as I entered and I did the same. I used the restroom and when I got out of the stall they had left. I washed my hands and returned to my table. I was not victimized or traumatized and until this came up in the media I never really thought about this experience. They were doing the same thing in the bathroom that I was, they were not there to harm me and to believe that the function of person using the restroom of the gender they feel they are not the one they were born does not bother me as it didn't when I was an unfiltered child.

Had I not known they were men dressed as women I would have never known the three women I encountered in the bathroom were not in fact women. This occurred in 1994..just think about that before you freak out over bathroom usage. This has been a normal thing for a very long time and you only now care because it is a hot button issue.

Your Thoughts?

Review of the Novel: Evole (The Immortal War)

Evolve

By: Harell Smiley

Rating: 3 Glasses

I had some trouble finishing this book due to a lot formatting issues with the book. The story itself was pretty good but it was hard to read. The premise is sold but it needs work on execution. I would like to read this again with some more polish to a very promising story.

Review of the Novel: Artificial Light

Artificial Light

By: Nathan Wall

Rating: 4 Glasses

I have not read the previous two books in the series which can some times make me hesitant to take on a third book in a series however I found this book was not hard to read without having read the previous two. For a fantasy/science fiction now this book fits perfectly in the genre. I was very intrigued by the characters and there are a bunch of them as well as a lot of things going on. It is a very complex story from multiple points of view. So if you enjoy complex science fiction then this is right for you, filled with action it is a quick read.

Ana's Post

Good Morning :) I don't have much to say today but to throw out some encouragement to those authors out there who are struggling.

John Grisham taught me to love books

Philippa Gregory taught me to embrace history

JK Rowling taught me to never give up on my dreams

Now your turn. Pick three authors and what they taught you :)

Review of the Novel: Knight

Knight

By: Ian Anderson

Rating: 3 1/2 Glasses

A well thought out and executed novel however one major flaw...it was very long and at times drug along at a very slow pace. It was almost tedious to read at times while at other times I found myself really enjoying it. It is a toss up for me. I think it could have been a much better novel if some of the slower points were eliminated and the more thrilling points were emphasized. If historical fiction is your genre and you enjoy tales of knights then this book may work perfectly for you.

Review of the Novel: The Travelers

The Travelers

By: Elizabeth Jeannel

Rating: 4 Glasses

An intriguing tale of a young girl whose life was flipped upside down by the departure of her parents. Multi-realm travel is the center of this adventure novel. It is told from multiple points of view which at times can be a bit redundant since two different people are telling us the same information. With that being said it was an interesting story and an enjoyable one. I would recommend for the young adult audience who enjoys adventure books.

Review of the Book: Jesus and the Goddess

Jesus and the Goddess

By: Rev Dr Claudia Hall

Rating: 5 Glasses

I feel kind of funny rating a book about faith with wine but hey I'm catholic we like wine. I had twelve years of catholic schooling so I am pretty familiar with the Jesus story so to read it alongside with a very different concept of religion and spirituality was very interesting. Dr Hall outlines some amazing points and thought provoking concepts that really opened my eyes to a new way of thinking. For the fans of theology or those who just want to open their minds this book is a must have.

Review of the Novel: The Glooming

The Glooming

By: John Triptych

Rating: 4 Glasses

I want to start by saying I love this cover! It drew me in right away. The beginning of the book however was a bit more of a challenge for me. There was a lot of skipping around which can work but it was a bit hard for me. It was a very tough book to read at points due to the violence and racial slurs but for someone like me it didn't slow me down to much. However if you are squeamish this book may not be to your liking. Overall I enjoyed it and would recommend for apocalypse book fans.

Review of the Novel: Forgotten

Forgotten

By: Neven Carr

Rating: 5 Glasses

Wow... just wow! Ms Carr you know how to keep a girl on her toes. I had to move this one up my list of books to read because I just had to read it and I was not disappointed. I have a soft spot for female protagonists and Claudia did not let me down.  I went through this book at record speeds as I didn't want to put it down. I will tell you nothing because that would eliminate the fun of reading a mystery novel :) Mystery lovers will not want to put this one down.

Review of the Novel: Loves Heals the Heart

Love Heals the Heart

By: Diana Rose Duffy

Rating: 4 Glasses

Quirky and cute. I am not one for sweet love stories but this one I enjoyed. Did it blow my mind..no but it did entertain me and that is all I really look for in a book. It is lighthearted and easy to read but nothing to crazy which kind of made me sad :( I think however people who enjoy lighthearted romance books will really enjoy this so if that is your genre of choice grab a copy it will be a perfect fit.

Review of the Novel: Narine of Noe

Narine of Noe

By: Danika Dinsmore

Rating: 5 Glasses

The more I read fantasy novels the more I love them. The intricate world that the author builds is so enchanting and addictive. I was sucked in within the first ten pages and had trouble putting it down. Narine is a great character with a lot of depth and pull for the reader to connect with. I loved her and female protagonist are the best!  Fantasy lovers must not pass this book up!

Review of the Novel: A Lost Legacy: Awakening

A Lost Legacy: Awakening

By: CE Dimond

Rating: 3 1/2 Glasses

I did enjoy reading this book but it had a major flaw to me...predictability. It was a very predictable book which I understand this novel is for the young adult audience not for someone my age but I could see it all coming. I liked the premise of the girl who discovers she is a witch and must deal with all the craziness that goes along with that. However it fell a little flat for me I wasn't thrilled reading it but again I don't think I am the target audience. If you enjoy the young adult fiction about girls and magic this book is perfect for you.

Review of the Novel: Going Underground

Going Underground

By: L.N. Denison

Rating: 5 Glasses

I read the prequel Oscar part 1 a while back so I decided to check out Going Underground to see where the story went. Now Oscar is not the primary character of this book but I was kind of glad about that. As much as I liked Oscar I really liked Jen. Female heroines are my favorite and this book has a great one. I really enjoyed the world building and government controlled society that the author brings us. Jen rocked and I cannot wait to see what happens next to this world in chaos.
