Sicario
Directed by: Denis Villenueve
Staring: Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro
The Breakdown: An idealistic FBI agent is enlisted by a government task force to aid in the escalating war against drugs at the border area between the U.S. and Mexico. (From IMDB)
My Review:
I rented this and slacked on watching it but once I did I was not disappointed. Blunt is an amazing actress and Del Toro is always on point and their performances were amazing. The biggest complaint I have is the actual shooting of the film. Several scenes take place at night or at times when they are in places where light is limited. I get the authenticity but it was at times hard to see what was going on. I know sometimes the darkness thing can add but at times I felt like it took away from us seeing the performances. My complaint aside it is a great movie with a powerful story that keeps the viewer interested and intrigued about where the story will go next.

Review of the Novel: While I was Gone
While I was gone
By: Amanda Steel
Rating: 4 Glasses
A mystery but more of a story of family strife. I enjoyed reading this book. It is just the right length for a story of its kind. I think it if would have been any longer I would have lost interest. It isn't filled with action or drama but more of family conflict and stress over who Kayla is and who she is going to be. It is a book for those who enjoy an emotional read that doesn't drag on pointlessly. Good length good book grab one. :)

Sometimes you fall so hard you can’t get back up. My closest companions now are shame and loss. But a sliver of hope lies in the only person I have left in this world – the one who’s growing inside me.
Survival becomes living again because of my child, and the town where I begin anew. That’s where I meet the man who starts to melt the ice inside my heart.
As we get closer, reminders of my past become sharper. Clearer. To confront the pain, I have to discover what’s deep down inside me. Is there enough left there to become whole again, or am I too wounded to heal?

Review of the short story: Arachnight
Arachnight
By: Angela J Maher
Rating: 4 Glasses
Short and terrifying. I was already scared when I looked at the cover...I do not do spiders. I am not a big horror person but I really enjoyed reading this short tale. Horror is best in small doses in my world, I need to sleep at some point. It was well written and great for a quick scare. I haven't read the work that this was inspired by so I can't compare it and honestly I don't want to. I like to take things as they are and as this is I enjoyed it.

Vambrace: Keaton Clarke's Tale
By: CB Archer
Rating: 5 Glasses
WTF did I just read? lol I am sorry but I was so thrilled to get something so original and unique I got through it in one afternoon. This is a book for the gamers among us..ie me. It was funny and creative with all the filth necessary to take it up a notch. If you love video games and enjoy a hilarious and creative take on them, then you must grab a copy and spend a hilarious afternoon like I did.

Review of the Novel: The Justifications of George Cann
The Justifications of George Cann
By: Nathan M Begley
Rating: 4 Glasses
I was a bit worried when I started this book. The idea of a grown man spying on teenage girls was well....creepy. However it was a well crafted story and I think the creep factor was necessary for the storyline. It is not for everyone but for those who enjoy a lot of intrigue and causes the reader to question their part in the story and who really is to blame. It is a unique story and for those who like these kinds of books it would be a perfect fit.

Film Friday: X-MEN Apocalypse
X-MEN Apocalypse
Directed by: Bryan Singer
Staring: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Oscar Isaac, Rose Byrne, Evan Peters
The Breakdown: With the emergence of the world's first mutant, Apocalypse, the X-Men must unite to defeat his extinction level plan. (From IMDB)
My Review:
Now I want to start this by pointing out that yes the X-MEN timelines in the films are very confusing. I get that and no I don't have a better explanation or understanding on how all the films fit together. However that does not take away my enjoyment of this film. I don't think they made any real errors in story or character. They give us strong characters and don't bog down the film with extensive back stories. I don't need a thirty minute "who is Jean Grey" we know who she is and where she came from this is the sixth X-Men film not counting the Wolverine films. I love the interactions between Alex and Scott as this is not something we were ever privy to before this film and seeing that for the X-Men fans was great. As usual McAvoy and Fassbender steal the film with amazing performance but I can't say that any of the star disappointed. I was cheering and gasping throughout the film and I already pre-ordered the digital version. It is in my top three of the X-Men films :)

Beware of what lurks in the shadows...
Four women have been found dead in the outskirts of a small Wisconsin town. The only witness, clairvoyant Celeste Risinski, observes these brutal murders through violent nightmares and hellish visions. The local sheriff, who believes in Celeste’s abilities and wants to rid their peaceful community of a killer, enlists the help of an old friend, Ian Scott, owner of a private criminal investigation agency, CORE. Because of Ian’s dark history with Celeste’s family, a history she knows nothing about, he sends his top criminalist, former FBI agent John Kain to investigate.
John doesn’t believe in Celeste’s mystic hocus-pocus, or in her visions of the murders. But just when he’s certain they’ve solved the crimes, with the use of science and evidence, more dead bodies are discovered. Could this somehow be the work of the same killer or were they dealing with a copycat? To catch a vicious murderer, the skeptical criminalist reluctantly turns to the sensual psychic for help. Yet with each step closer to finding the killer, John finds himself one step closer to losing his heart.

Review of the Novel: The Legend of the Dagger Prince
The Legend of the Dagger Prince
By: T.A. Gallant
Rating: 4 Glasses
A very entertaining fantasy novel. I really enjoyed the storyline and how the characters fell into their rolls. The biggest complaint I have is the character names. I know that sounds silly but some of them I couldn't even figure out how to say. This really look me out of the story several times as I was given a name I spent like five minutes trying to figure out how to say. Overall it is a great story that is well written and enjoyable just be prepared to break out some hard core language skills saying the names.

Film Friday: Captain America: Civil War
Captain America: Civil War
Directed by: Anthony Russo & Joe Russo
Staring: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Renner, Paul Bettany, Chadwick Boseman, Elizabeth Olsen
The Breakdown: Political interference in the Avengers' activities causes a rift between former allies Captain America and Iron Man. (From IMDB)
My Review:
I know it's not an indie film but I just had to review it :) I was eagerly anticipating this film as a Marvel junkie through and through. I was not disappoint in the least! I went to the film with my movie buddies and one of them is the stoic type. He never cheers or shows emotions during a film, he just takes it all in. This was the first film that got him cheering! This is the avengers movie we always wanted. It may be called Captain America but lets be honest it is an Avengers film and it is one done right. I can't wait to see what the Russo brothers bring us next and to see what happens to Black Panther. Chadwick nailed the role and in my opinion was the best character in the entire film. It is a must see for super hero fans and everyone else who enjoys a good film.
